I personally believe that no one can really understand others' situation, let alone others' feelings, unless he/she has been in that exact same situation before.

heck, I can't say I'm 100% certain about that.
But at least it works that way for me.

Let's say you're a brilliant student who've never been failed in any of your school subjects.
I'm not saying that you've never been through neither adversities nor obstacles in your way,
but somehow, you always can manage to get over those.

One time, your friend came along, sobbed. He/She failed to pass his/her final test.
What would you do, then?
consoled him/her, I'm certain.
but how?

You've never experienced any severe failure so far on your way.
You've never got the feeling to be so devastated, to be such a loser.
You might encourage him/her to get the spirit on again, to cheer up
and tell him/her that this wasn't the world's end.
You might as well just listen to his/her babble, and pat him/her on shoulder.

but did you understand what he/she was going through?
all the good-and-sound-so-wise advices and objective reviews might just represent such a low degree of understanding, am I right?

Had you been in that tough situation, you might not be able to say any of those insightful thoughts
since you knew exactly what it's like to be in his/her shoes.
You probably would tell her how you felt the same way.
You -and he/she- probably would blame his/her teacher for that matters.

What good it will be?
Would it help you friend to get over it?
Would it help your friend to gain his/her unbiased point of view?

This is what's been bothering my mind these days:
you might understand other's situation completely, but then you lost your objective, unbiased and logical point of view.
OR
you might be able to be as logical, as insightful and as encouraging as you can be, but erm..
you don't really grasp the others' feeling and situation.

which one do you prefer as a friend?
which one do you prefer as yourself?

the insightful, empathetic one?
or the wise, rational, encouraging one?

or is it just possible to be such a comprehensive and a reassuring person simultaneously?
